How to Apply SkynCap™ with Wig Tape

When you're on set, time is tight, the lights are hot and every detail needs to be camera-ready. Whether you're prepping an actor for a long shoot day or creating a seamless SFX transformation, the SkynCap™ offers a reliable, reusable, and protective base that is perfect for demanding film and television work.

Here’s how to professionally apply the SkynCap™ using wig tape, ensuring a secure hold and a flawless finish every time.

🧰 Tools & Products Used:

  • SkynCap™

  • Walker’s Wig Tape (for strong but breathable hold)

  • Small blunt edge scissors

  • Edge brush

  • Tweezers - MAC full coverage creme foundation (for blending)

  • ProClean Cleansing Oil (for skin prep)

  • Kryolan Translucent Powder or Anti-Shine Powder (to set and mattify)

1. Prep the Scalp or Base

Start with a clean surface. Wipe the hairline perimeter with cleanser or a professional skin prep solution. This removes oils and ensures the tape adheres effectively. Let it dry completely.

🔍 Pro Tip: For textured or braided hair under the cap, ensure it's flat and smooth to avoid bulk or bumps under the wig.

Use small brush with light hair wax to smooth back baby hair.

2. Apply Wig Tape to the Head

Cut small skinny strips of wig tape and apply them below the hairline perimeter around the forehead, temple area and sides.

Press each strip firmly into place so they grip the cap’s inner surface. Remove the tape backing only when you're ready to apply it to the scalp.

3. Position the Cap & Apply Cap onto the Tape

Place the cap on the head and align it to the desired position (just behind or slightly overlapping the natural hairline, depending on the look).

Carefully peel the backing from each strip of tape. Starting from the forehead and working your way around, press the faux skin material down onto the tape.

💡 Press firmly for 5–10 seconds per section to ensure proper adhesion. You can use a blow dryer on cool or warm (not hot) setting to seal the bond faster.

4. Trim the Excess Poly Skin Material

Once the cap is fully secured with the tape, use small sharp scissors to trim any excess faux skin around the perimeter.
Cut close to the tape line or wherever your desired lace or wig edge will begin.

✂️ This creates a seamless transition under lace wigs, prosthetic appliances, or hairpieces.

6. Check Fit & Comfort

Have the actor or model move their head and facial muscles to ensure comfort and flexibility. Adjust only if necessary as this should feel snug but not restrictive.

✂️ Final Notes for Wig Stylists & SFX Artists

  • Touch-Ups: If the cap lifts during filming, use additional wig tape or a bit of water-based adhesive to secure edges without disrupting makeup or prosthetics.

  • Removal: Gently peel the cap off from the back and use adhesive remover to lift the tape away from the scalp.

  • Tape Removal: Soak in water for 30mins - 1hr until the tape lifts for easy removal.

  • Sanitizing: The cap is reusable. Clean with gentle soap and water or disinfectant spray, then air dry flat.

Why Stylists Choose SkynCap™:
